I hate Expression Engine… alot

A week or so ago, I had the privilege to work on David Pache‘s website: [dache.ch]. I had to do a few CSS fixes here and because his website was not rendering properly in certain browsers (Internet Explorer) and he also wanted some additions done to his site.  He wanted a blog section to be added in which he calls the dacheboard and some other categories for his portfolio.

All seemed pretty good and this was my first time working on Expression Engine [EE].  I had a hard time because I am so use to WordPress and all its glorious simplicity and I stumbled trying to perform the most simple tasks such as adding a new category or working with their own template language system.

While it was pretty interesting, they made everything too hard and I had to learn this new expression language in order to get posts from a certain category and so forth.  On the other hand with WordPress; some PHP knowledge is necessary to do what you need to do but that isn’t a problem since that is what I have been using for the past 4 or 5 years.

Another thing that I found to be problematic with EE is that the template system was inside the administration panel and I couldn’t use FTP or dreamweaver in order to make direct edits to the website.  There was an option to save the templates as files onto the server but that just gave problems and I ended up getting no where.

On a plus side, EE seems to have its own userbase which is probably as great or even greater than WordPress and they seem to know what they are doing to keep their clients coming back.  I can’t complain because its just not my niche to work in and I don’t plan on doing that any time soon.  The documentation of their web application seems to be pretty good and I can’t say that I didn’t learn something new.

Also, David has some very nice work in his portfolio and you should check it out some time.  His work covers a lot of different areas such as logos and prints and I wish him the best of luck with the success of his career.  In case you missed that, its @ dache.ch

So Many Clients, So Little Time…

Well, I am sure that my name is out there, atleast some where. I have had so many clients coming in needing jobs done that its crazy! I have Dan from http://www.predatorstuff.com with a recode of his blog / script and I have another client who is starting up a myspace supply site with a CMS to do all the little chores. There is also another one who wants a Movie Trailer CMS. One with a Word Press layout that needs coded. An entertainment site CMS thingy mah bobber. And also, v3.final has to be released within about 2 weeks. A Game Review CMS, and probably a lot more stored somewhere else. Of course all these tasks will be completed, and before dinner too 😀

The problem I have is that I have school and I participate in a lot of activities at my Church and in my community. You just wait world! Wait until I am out of school! YOU WILL BE MINE! 😛

Not that I am complaining, I need to build up my portfolio with some nice looking sites, well developed and such. That will bring in even bigger clients in the future. Plus, I need the money to support my projects / LiquidxHost ( The BEST Webhost by the way… 😛 ) I still have not started on TutCMS, my sweet project. I may pick up a few friends and ask them to tag along for the development of that script, who knows. I also have volunteered to help out in some other projects too. School just takes up so much of my day. I get up at 5:45, go to the bus by 6:20. Reach school by 7:10 on a good morning. Go to school…. School ends at 2:30, get home at minutes to 4:00. Turn on computer, check mail, do homework, check mail again, go online / visible. Do work if I am home that day, and then BOOM, its 12:30, back to bed… So yah, So Many Clients, So Little Time… 🙂

TutCMS!

Hey folks!

I have recently started on my latest project: “TutCMS”. It will be the v2 of my tutorial script “Advanced Tutorial CMS”, but will be a real script and not a tutorial. It will more and likely be very professional using css / divs and no tables 😉 With a touch and PHP and a dab of MySQL, it will be coded for PHP 4+ ( Maybe only PHP5 ), and MySQL 4+ it is definatly going to be a powerhouse.
Planned Features:

  • Administration Panel
  • User System
  • Membership System
  • Post News
  • Post Tutorials
  • Post Comments
  • Mod Rewrite Enabled 😀
  • Self – Install / Upgrade
  • CSS / DIVs, no tables!
  • PM Messenger
  • RSS Enabled!
  • AJAX Intergrated…
  • Skin Editer
  • Rating System
  • Custom Pages
  • User Profiles
  • Request Tutorials
  • Contact Form
  • Much More!

I am still debating if I want this to be a paid or free script. I am possibly going to make it paid, but I am not sure about it yet, still thinking much of it and where I am going to go with it.

First Theme in WP!

Thanks to Dan ( www.danrichard.com ), I have successfully coded by first WordPress theme!  It was rather run actually and I really enjoyed the way it was so easy to work with.  It was a bit troublesome at first, with all the skin changes from the default skins to making your own, but it was well worth it!  I will definately do it again 😀
